Ferrite measurement or delta ferrite measurement and the control of ferrite phase in both Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steels is important to maximise the physical, mechanical and corrosion resistance of the material. Austenitic steels and duplex steels have to withstand heat, aggressive chemicals and/or high pressure. If the ferrite content is too low, for example in the area of weld seams, this can lead to a loss in strength. On the other hand, too-high ferrite content reduces corrosion resistance, toughness and ductility. Ferrite is an important constituent of stainless steel as it helps prevent hot cracking when the material is welded. In Austenitic Stainless Steels too much ferrite will lead to a reduction in the corrosion resistance properties of the material. In the pharmaceutical industry a lot of research has been done in relation to the ferrite content and it effect on corrosion resistance and rouge. Ferrite content measurement (Ferritescope) is a non-destructive test usually performed on site which uses portable feritscope machine and this handy device gives quick and precise data. Ferrite content measurement is used to measure the ferrite value in stainless steel welds and duplex steel. This ferritescope test is useful for industries such as oil and gas, power and process engineering plants that are exposed to high temperature, aggressive media and high pressure..
